<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As a young child Alice loved to draw and it was always a favorite pastime for her. Life took her in another direction and as she pursued a doctorate in education. When retiring for Director of that title for the Indiana Deparment of Education, she would revisit her "passion."

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Upon returning to her art she found an emotional connection to color. Alice knew that she wanted to create art that was different from what she had previously experimented and using color was her avenue. When viewers see her work they can tell she is in love with "color." An artist once said that you can make color whisper or shout. Alice prefers that any color placed on the canvas must shout back at her. When she looks at a finished work, she steps bad to see if the color speaks to her. If not the canvas is set aside and she may return to it at a later date. It is her use of vibrant colors and not being afraid of trying different color combinations that sets her apart from other artists. The two themes that Alice enjoys creating are still life/floral collections and landscapes.

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Life Out of Chaos – a Series of Paintings
Daniel Driggs
Opening Reception: Friday, May 20
Live music by John the Silent
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 1989, Driggs attended a retreat where God stepped in to change his life. He decided to take a sabbatical from his artwork to study and surrender to the Lordship of Jesus in his life. That surrender led him to seminary and the pulpit ministry. He was a pastor for 18 years before God allowed him again to do his artwork.
Today, Driggs’ artwork is different than it was in his earlier art career. Although he still paints still life and landscape scenes, his passion has become people and animals – a subject he avoided in prior years. The change has come in realizing that every life is unique and special to God.
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Artist Statement:
In today’s world, we see chaos on all sides. This is reflected in much of the music, theater and art that are produced today. But if we take the time and look closer, we find that there is beauty focused amid the chaos. This is what the Bible described when it tells that God looked into the earth that was void and without form and brought about light, order and life.
This series of paintings is designed to help the viewer see the intricate details of life that are found amidst the chaos of our world. Each painting calls us to slow down, focus and enjoy the beauty of the world around us. Some of the paintings are focused on people; others are animals and plants that exhibit the beauty of life.
Artist Biography:
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Born and raised in Nebraska, Driggs developed the love of art as a child. He attended Hastings College where he earned a BS degree in Art and Art Education. Driggs painted, taught, and exhibited his art professionally for 18 years. Through the years he owned and/or managed galleries in Omaha, NE, Laramie, WY and Cheyenne, WY. During those years, Dan’s artwork developed into the center of his life. In fact, it became like a god to him, in competition with the One True GOD.
He has built a CNC router from scratch in the garage to extend his work into reliefs and sculptures in wood and plastics.BE PART OF IT!http://www.blogger.com/profile/08050617218270075677noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572017821677838407.post-68635660885138504102016-02-20T06:38:00.004-08:002016-02-20T06:39:22.875-08:00People, Places, and Things - Photographs by Dr. Kathy Steele

Dr. Kathy Steele states: “In my travels in the United States and abroad, I have been fascinated with the unique faces, landscapes and objects created by man or nature. This photographic show will explore all three areas, each being displayed on individual walls. The eyes of the “People” wall will mystify you; the “Places” wall will invite you to relax and enjoy natural landscapes; and the “Things” wall will open your eyes to exotic animals, colorful flowers and bright butterflies. Sets of cards will also be available representing all three facets of the show.

This is Kathy’s first solo photographic show. Her photographs have graced the cover of a national magazine, a calendar, brochures, educational publications, and newspaper articles. She has exhibited in two Montgomery County Art League juried shows, three Montgomery County Art League shows at the Crawfordsville Public Library and two Salon shows at Athens Arts.

The current Athens Arts Gallery exhibit offers a delightful view of the wide range of work by Clay Guild potters and artists. Visitors will see both functional and sculptural pieces reflecting a wide variety of clay bodies, surfaces, glazes, and firing techniques. Gallery visitors will also see samples of the 100 dessert plates handmade by the Clay Guild and donated to Athens for their current fundraising efforts.

The Greater Lafayette Clay Guild was founded in 2011 to promote artistic growth, education, and appreciation of ceramic arts.

Membership and participation in the Guild is open to both clay “makers” and clay “appreciators.” Guild members include beginners, seasoned professionals, and everything in between, all encouraging and learning from each other and reaching out to the community. Members also include those who don’t “do” clay, but enjoy collecting and learning about the art and process of clay.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Guild’s outreach is the 14-county TAF (Tippecanoe Arts Federation) community. Through exhibits, workshops, sales, demonstrations, networking, and presentations, the Guild brings to its members and audiences an increased awareness of clay as both legitimate art and functional craft...and a whole lot of FUN!

Artist Statement:
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always dreamed of becoming an artist. My appreciation for beauty within nature came naturally having been born and raised on a farm. From childhood, I was continually surrounded by the subtle beauty of Indiana’s rural landscape and have often felt God’s presence within the serenity and grandness of nature. From an early age, I began to feel I was blessed with a God-given talent for the arts which continue to fuel my artistic and inward journey.

In 1975, my first oil painting was influenced by Steve Swagerle: my high school teacher, who was living in one of the houses on our farm. I was so inspired when I walked into his home to find every room filled with oil paintings stacked three and four deep. It was then that I knew I wanted to paint with oils.

I began to work from photographs rendering realistic works, and for a short while I studied drawing and design at Purdue University before the duties of life called me away. I never abandoned my dreams of being an artist and I continued to develop my skills both technically and from within. It was not until I studied under the award winning artist Hilary Eddy, that my artistic journey took me on a new path of self-exploration. Instead of earth tones, which I now refer to as my “umber days”, my painting started to explode with color. I was later influenced at a T.C. Steele Historical site paint out, where I discovered the joy of painting en plein aire. I was transported with the freedom discovered by painting nature in the open landscape. That freedom of painting outdoors also began to liberate my brush—my strokes became more fluid interpretations of light and shadow. My paintings are now impressionistic and full of movement and color.

Art is continual learning. I believe I have learned more from teaching painting than my students have learned from me. I also give credit to all of the artists with whom I have worked and shared the experience of interpreting the many beautiful landscapes of Indiana. As an artist, I look forward to painting more and learning more. I am on an artistic journey and gladly follow the path that illuminated my dreams as a young boy. Follow and keep your dreams because dreams can come true.BE PART OF IT!http://www.blogger.com/profile/08050617218270075677noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572017821677838407.post-60050089109694103732015-06-09T18:48:00.002-07:002015-06-09T18:51:10.364-07:00INSPIRING ART QUILTS BLOOM AT ATHENS ARTS GALLERYCrawfordsville's long-awaited Spring silently gained the strength necessary to push the rain and dull, dark days of Winter away. Not a moment too soon, I might add! A colorful profusion of scents and colors so vivid they take your breath away has come to the rescue. So too the creative adventures of Crawfordsville's Sugar Creek Quilters, percolated in hybernation during those same dark, dull days of late winter, have not so miraculously sprung forth in a myriad profusion of bold, colorful imaginings that redirect the ordinary into something quite extra-ordinary – Original Art Quilts - straight from the verdant imaginations of each Sugar Creek Quilt artist.

Kathy was born in Madison Wisconsin, and moved to Carmel, Indiana as a child. She married her childhood sweetheart in 1975. They lived in Indianapolis, and Carmel for many years, until their children were grown. After 6 years in Wisconsin, Kathy and her husband moved back to Indiana settling in Crawfordsville.

Kathy had the great fortune to begin art training at Highland High School, in Highland, Indiana, which has always had an excellent art department. She owes a debt of gratitude to those instructors and mentors who were so instrumental in providing her with a solid foundation on which to develop her skills.

Kathy is currently working in her studio full time, unless distracted by her four grandsons, or her gardens. Kathy's gardening passion provides her with unending subject matter and inspiration. The grandsons are mostly just joy and entertainment.

While traveling locally and across the country, she is always on the lookout for motivation. As each piece is finished, she hopes that she has conveyed some of the love, appreciation, and respect that she has for nature.BE PART OF IT!http://www.blogger.com/profile/08050617218270075677noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572017821677838407.post-36170202834124950212015-03-21T12:33:00.001-07:002015-04-19T14:32:18.807-07:00Kick the Canvas Till it Bleeds Daylight

I think we all choose roles and responsibilities to tackle that cause us to be spread thin. Women in art specifically through history have had to balance their lives between being mothers, caring for the home and family, and art. When we are pulled in multiple directions things can become heavy and dark.

Singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn released an album in 1991 titled, “Kick at the Darkness.” I had never heard of the artist until a sermon at church several months ago. The pastor expressed how we have to press on through faith, go the distance, and persevere through the darkness like singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn says in one of his songs, gotta kick at the darkness ’til it bleeds daylight. The lyric resonated in me, and I reflected on the idea for several days.

On the surface it may appear negative, but “Kick the Canvas Till it Bleeds Daylight” is about progression, perseverance, self discovery, faith, and the different canvases I work with. I make marks in clay, design and paint bags, and create paintings while thinking of my family, friends, customers, current news, and people I casually pass, like a meditation. My work has always been about a journey, the world around us, religion, being a woman, connections between people, and relationships.

Kick the Canvas is a series of work sampling what I do to shake off the darkness, and the different canvases I use to express the light.

Artist Bio:
Angela Vinson (Lala) an artist since the ol’ pushing crayons around days; works from her studio in Lafayette, Indiana creating paintings, prints, sculptures, pottery, handbags, and more.

Her work first began as an exploration with the elements and principles of design and figures began to emerge. She communicates people, community, togetherness, isolation, and journeys in her work.

Lala began her college studies as an art education major, but was soon drawn into the clay studio. After her sophomore year she committed to ceramics and received her BFA from Herron School of Art. Lala spent a year at Purdue University pursuing her MA in ceramics and decided teaching was her passion, and received her MA in secondary education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2007. In May 2008 Lala opened LaLa Gallery & Studio, and has been a full time teacher, curator, event organizer, and working artist ever since.BE PART OF IT!http://www.blogger.com/profile/08050617218270075677noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572017821677838407.post-57374833128146029082015-02-25T14:25:00.001-08:002015-04-19T14:31:57.052-07:00SPRINGTIME IN FRANCE! 2015 GALA!

Exhibit "In Harmony" by Terri Duncan
up until June 28.

Showing at Athens Arts in the Special Exhibit Room

“In Harmony” features musical influences incorporated into contemporary paintings. From the African drum beats and cave drawings of the dawn of man to present day contemporary art forms, music and art have always been related to communication. Both mediums are created with great emotion because the artist is sharing their inner most views. This exhibit blends Terri's love of music into her artwork. However, she states - no ability to sing or play an instrument was required. The artwork is music for your eyes. Vivid color and rich, textured surfaces are key elements. Terri's process involves building multiple layers integrating a variety of mediums such as acrylic paint, collage, texturizing techniques and resin.

Artist statement:
"I have been a professional artist for over 15 years but have loved creating art from the time I could pick up a crayon. Since 2002 I’ve been a member/owner of the Artists’ Own Gallery in Lafayette, IN, a cooperative gallery operated by local artists. I have exhibited locally and nationally in juried shows, galleries, and art fairs. My artwork can be found in private and public collections. I was born, raised and currently live in Lafayette, IN but have traveled extensively and lived throughout the U.S. and Europe."BE PART OF IT!http://www.blogger.com/profile/08050617218270075677noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4572017821677838407.post-11963032860996531362014-06-08T19:54:00.001-07:002014-06-08T19:55:20.325-07:00BROWN BAG LUNCHEON SERIES!

For the last ten years Karen has had the desire to paint a series of paintings on gateways, windows and doors. Doors and gateways represent our desire to see what is on the other side if we should we choose to enter. What adventures will happen to us if we risk entering? Will it change our lives? Will we see things in a different way? What does the architecture of an entryway say to the viewer? Is it inviting, intimidating, awesome or threatening?
As if there were blinders on her eyes she began to chase ideas around in her mind until all practical concerns encompassed her. She rolled the cotton vision up.
Animals, birds and earth joined the kaleidoscope of fractured light in a field of vibration. She knew what had to be created. "Lady of the Crossroads, Hecate" was birthed before knowing how to paint it.

Direct from the artist’s hand, an original painting or sculpture, finely crafted jewelry or turned wood may be more expensive than a copy, but it’s alive with the artist’s spirit and vision! Nothing mass-produced by an anonymous machine can come close to the sense of vitality that emanates from an original work of art. Why fill your home with machine-made kitsch when you can own original and affordable works of art created by respected local artists? If your budget is tight, you can ask the artist or gallery about leasing work or paying by layaway.

Like prayer, meditation and yoga, art can be a relaxing and spiritual force in your life, whether you practice it or simply look at it. Surrounding yourself with local art that is unique and meaningful provides a sense of comfort you can’t find in commercially manufactured products. Art becomes a life-long friend.

Have you ever collected coins or stamps? Most avid collectors are attracted by the beauty and rarity of these treasures. Original artwork is unique—one of a kind. You’ll never walk into someone else’s home and see your art on their walls. True collectors buy art for love, not money. They take pleasure in being surrounded by beauty, knowing that there is special meaning in the art they have personally chosen or commissioned. Since much local art is affordable and collectable, whether you collect by artist, genre, medium or style, you’re likely to find what you want right in your own backyard. Buy a piece of art because you love it, and let your own sensibility and intuition be the best guides.
