I'm Wearing Green

Posted on | Saturday, April 28, 2012 | No Comments

I'm wearing green tonight. No it's not St. Patrick's Day but it is a day to celebrate.  Just like a tiny seed can grow into a mighty oak, a small idea can grow into a big reality.

Athens of Indiana Arts Studios & Gallery has grown and is growing the arts in Montgomery County. We celebrate today by wearing green - see the green wrapped tree out front and the green adorned window!

We celebrate YOU! All of you who have supported this gallery from it's inception to what it is now. YOU who just found out about the gallery and came in for a visit. YOU the artist whose passion for the arts have graced the walls of this gallery. YOU who have shown in the featured artist room nervously welcoming guests to admire your works.  YOU who have given of your time to answer the phone, sweep the floors and greet guests that walk through our door. YOU who have painted, fixed, wired, displayed and designed. YOU who have taught and shared your passion. YOU who have sponsored this gallery with purchase, sponsorship and donation. YOU who have worked on what seems endless hours on scheduling, creating events, writing grant proposals, while brainstorming ideas to grow this gallery even more. Every last one of YOU. We thank you and we celebrate you today by wearing green.

Welcome to the Athens Arts Gala!

Reflections of Main - Featured artist Exhibit April

Posted on | Monday, April 2, 2012 | 1 Comment

Reflections of Main as seen by:
 windel w. asher

Exhibit showing in the special exhibit room at Athens Arts
April 4 - May 12

Opening Reception April 7, 6-8pm

windel w. asher has had the opportunity to see downtown Crawfordsville from a very different point of view than most others.  Spending a majority of time with his back to the street, windel started noticing what could be seen in the reflection of the window that was before him. As he became more aware of his surroundings, windel started seeing the combinations of interior and exterior views that could be molded into one composite view… realizing how the two could enhance each other, thus giving the unique perspective a whole new meaning.
“Reflections of Main” has evolved as a photo project created by windel w. asher. They are photos of recognizable downtown Crawfordsville landmarks, street corners, and complete city blocks from a unique perspective… as reflected from another downtown business window. Recognizable locations such as The Court House, The Marie Canine Plaza, the old Crawfordsville Bank Building and a very different view of the Post Office and Clock from the Ben Hur Building take on a slightly different appearance.  The reflection is not the only thing seen in these pictures. One can glimpse into the interior of the business whose window is used for the reflection. Some are very easy to see and some that are, well, somewhat difficult. But all are unique in their combination.

Kenn Clark, windel's creator, will be on hand to
comment about windel's individual perspective.

Music will be provided by Amy Demlow.
Light refreshments served.

ARTIST STATEMENTS:

PAT BURNS

One of my favorite activities is hiking in the woods along Sugar Creek. These prints are selected from photos that I have taken over the past few spring seasons.

I use my own printing equipment, so I have complete control. From the act of taking the photo to how it appears on the wall. I do not make any adjustments to my photos other than what is necessary to make them appear as close as possible to what I see through the lens.

It is my hope that this collection will give you pleasure and make you look forward to your next opportunity to go for a walk in the woods.

My background:

I grew up along Sugar Creek and attended the New Market Schools. My father Jene Burns was a local Artist and encouraged my interest in art. I attended Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansa, and received degrees in Biology and Art.

After graduating, my wife, Debbie and I moved back to the same area that I grew up in to raise our children.

PONTIP BERRY:

My name is Pontip Berry and I own and operate Berry Beautiful Flowers. I am located in Avon, Indiana, where I sculpt and hand paint flowers made from specialty clay.

After my son went to college I was visiting my native country, Thailand, when I discovered a small flower shop. I became intrigued and instantly applied myself to learning the art of making these clay flowers. My next trip to Thailand I acquired the craft of creating flowers from air dry clay. I was immediately inspired and wanted to share this craft in America where I have been sharing these beautiful and unique pieces.

It has been nearly five years and I love sculpting new flowers each week. The special air dry clay is imported which adds to the uniqueness of the flowers. The process of making flowers keeps me occupied as it takes time to specialize and customize. Many hours are dedicated to the small details as everything you see is done by hand. Many first impressions of the flowers are that they are real. The first question often asked is, “Are they real?” The flowers are real in the sense that you can touch and keep them forever. These flowers look real and have a lasting impact on your home or office.

I often travel to arts and craft shows to display my flowers. Each flower has many hours of detailed and individualized colors and schemes. I have flowers in various shapes and sizes, from miniature to large. I am optimistic you will find each arrangement to be stunningly beautiful and amazingly lifelike. Each flower has a different expression creating new colors and effects on your living room, bedroom, kitchen, office and more. This is a great way to show your appreciation to others or yourself. The flowers are great for special occasions or events, keepsakes, part of a collection, or a simple gift.

Artist Statement:
My subject matter originates from my photographs, my plein air painting experiences, and my memory. I paint primarily in acrylics and oils, often introducing other elements, such as collage paper, to achieve my desired vibrant colors and textures.

When people view my work, I want them to simply enjoy it, indulging in the uncomplicated imagery through my bold and vivid palette.
